I had an itching to do a fall photoshoot the other day, so I asked my wonderful roommate, Sydney, if she would be willing to model for me in the middle of a pumpkin patch (to which she agreed with a delighted squeal). We styled her outfit, hair and makeup, and chose Port City Produce in Wilmington, North Carolina as our location.

My idea was to play with halloween themes for her look. I knew I wanted her to wear all black to give her a gothic edge and to pop against the colors of the background. We went with a more casual outfit: ripped black skinny jeans and a cropped black tee. I told her to channel her inner Avril Lavigne as inspiration. We dressed up the look with layers of jewelry. Bangles, rings, necklaces. Once we added the chocker we were like, this is it.
For her hair, I asked that she embrace her beautiful natural curls. She was reluctant at first, but once we styled the hair, it was just so fun to play with. So many of the shots were her repeatedly flipping her hair so I could get some sort of magical shampoo model result.
We chose Port City Produce's pumpkin patch for the shooting location. For a few reasons, the most obvious being: pumpkins. They had every type of pumpkin imaginable. All of the different colors made for a festive backdrop. They also had a carnival-like stand (seen above) that sold funnel cakes and drinks, which made some of the photos look like they were taken at a state fair. I loved playing with the different colors that the location offered.

We approached this photoshoot with full sass and silliness. Anything from "Can you lay down in the pile of tiny pumpkins?" to "Look at that pumpkin like it's your boyfriend and he was out with another girl until 2 A.M."

The key is not to know what you're doing, it's just simply to try and see what happens.

Sydney was so cooperative and lovely to work with. She did not hesitate to try any of my crazy ideas, even with strangers watching her from all directions. So many of the photos turned out phenomenal, all thanks to her willingness to try new things. Don't be afraid to get silly or feel awkward. If it works, great! If it doesn't, at least you had fun.
